Is this Russian girl scamming me? How to recognize scammers

Are you an American or Western European man exchanging emails with a girl from Russia? I was contacted by a girl who turned out to be a scammer. Reader Derrick put together some great advice how to detect scammers.
I only have one advice (#8) to add: If a Russian girl tells you that she will get a visa to the USA instead of inviting you, that is - under the current immigration law - a SURE sign that SHE LIES.
Here is the process how a Russian woman can come to the USA:
If she is considered a relatively young/ attractive woman (let's say under 40, hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings here), then there is virtually NO CHANCE THAT SHE GETS A TOURIST VISA TO THE USA. First the Russian Federation will not allow her to leave the country. Then, even if she was getting out, the USA will deny her admission. The reasoning is that she is considered a risk. How could she not be a risk? If she had family in Russia (husband, children) or a valuable business or real estate. Most likely the woman who writes you will be considered a risk. The only way for her to get a visa into the USA is this procedure:
the foreign man visits her in her native area in Russia
they get engaged during such a visit - take photos of the 2 of you together
he flies back and applies for a K-1 visa. A K-1 visa is also known as Fiancee visa, used for marriage-based immigration
once the K1 visa is granted, the girl can enter the USA and stay there for 3 months. By the end of these 3 months you HAVE to GET MARRIED or the girl has to go back home.
if you get married, the girl gets a greencard and can work
after 3 years of marriage, the girl can apply for a US citizenship. That's when they interview you to find out if it's a real marriage. She also has to answer some questions about US history, political system, etc etc.
Here are Derrick's tricks (1-7) that he uses immediately from the start:
GOOGLE or websearch the first part of the scammers first emails and/or 'profile'. SEE HOW MANY OTHER SITES their listed on! RECORD THOSE SITES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THAT alone can give you a good idea IF your dealing with a scammer OR not.
GOOGLE or websearch the return email address. See how many 'hits' come from that search and also note all the sites. (many times you'll see the email end up on a 'scammers list') IF YOU FIND THE EMAIL ADDRESS LISTED ON A SCAMMER LIST - don't bother further, your only fooling yourself - no matter what excuse they might give you.
FROM THE START - ASK FOR SPECIFIC INFOMATION! A full name, address, phone number - something. OFFER THE SAME in exchange, except make it a P.O. box and a CELL PHONE rental card that will protect your identity. If you see your requests ignored, which you usually will, don't waste your time further.
ALWAYS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS that would REQUIRE A SPECIFIC ANSWER outside the use of FORM LETTERS. IF YOU FIND your questions go unaddress in your reply emails from 'them/her' - YOUR DEALING WITH A SCAMMER. Again, don't bother further.
DON'T WAIT 6 MONTHS to offer to talk with the PROSPECT by phone! WHAT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! IF THERE IS CHEMISTRY OR APPEARS 'INTEREST' BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU - then sieze the opportunity. ARRANGE A PHONE CALL! International rates to Russia and most places are reasonably cheap. IF YOU GET THE REPLY ' I'M SO POOR I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE' - drop the whole thing, your only wasting your time and WILL BE SCAMMED at some point in the future.
PHOTO FLOOD! IF IT/SHE/HIM/THEM - LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - THEN IT PROBABLY IS! MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE SCAMMES USE PHOTOS OF MODELS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES TO POSE ON THE NET IN THEIR PROFILE(s)! Consider this - IF THEY LOOK like a MODEL then tell you they're so poor they don't have access to a phone - YOUR BEING SCAMMED!
ASK FOR A SPECIAL PHOTO TO BE TAKEN. IF YOU SENT YOURS, HAVE THEM TAKE A PHOTO SHOWING THEM HOLDING UP YOUR PHOTO IN THE PICTURE! That is a good 'scammer filter' - even the most adept with Photoshop will easily be spoted.
BETTER STILL - ASK THEM TO TAKE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS THEM HOLDING A CURRENT NEWPAPER OF YOUR CHOICE OR THEIR COUNTRY, WITH A RESOLUTION THAT YOU CAN READ THE DATE! NOT some low grade - grainy photo! FEW WILL EVER DO THAT.
AT THE LEAST - ASK THEM FOR A PHOTO of them wearing a specific combination of clothes and/or colors - something different then the usual 'model clothing' - most use to send out. OR AN OBJECT - TOASTER, ELECTRIC CLOCK, BY A COUCH, IN A ROCKING CHAIR something that would be very hard to use PHOTOSHOP to just PUT in another FILE PHOTO.
*** IF this person is real or sincere, they won't mind doing this for you! ALSO - offer to do the same for their comfort also - that is only fair.
IF THINGS GET SERIOUS - then ASK THEM TO DELETE ALL THEIR OTHER WEB PROFILE POSTS! CHECK ON THE ONES YOU NOTED EARLIER! Again, IF THEIR SINCERE - they will - happily as your their DREAM and future!
If she talks about getting a visa or that she needs money to get a travel visa to the USA, she lies. See the proper course of action described at the top.
Hello to All....I have a unqinue situation here. As I understand, many here have been scammed. Strangely enough, since I am so new to this, I do not know if I have been actually scammed, although, I suspect I have been.
The woman which I have been writing to for a month is a Russian. I met her on the Irish penpal.org website. After I met her and wrote a few emails, she took her profile off the website and said she would not accept emails from other men. I asked her point blank why she wanted to stop writing others(I never told her to stop) and she said all the other men wanted was erotic photos and she wasnt going to send nude photos of herself to men over the internet.
Well, about the 7th or 8th letter, it was near CHristmas and she asked for me to send her $150 in order to help pay for the new cell phone, she said she broke the old one by dropping it. I told her I wasnt in the habit of sending money to people I did not know.
Well, the letters got more romantic (by both of us) and when the beginning of Feb 09 came, I decided to take a chance and sent her $375 for a travel visa. But I read on another site that is next to near impossible for a single russian woman to obtain a travel visa to the US. Is this true?
Well, I was a little leery and decided that I was going to end the correspondence and wrote her a letter saying goodbye. I told her I could not afford a wife from abroad. And she wrote the following letter back to me:
'Hello my lovely Ray!
I do not know how to describe the feelings when I have read your letter...
To me it was very bad... You 'have simply killed' me the letter... Has destroyed all my dreams...
I thought, that you will act as true the man, but you appeared is weak...
I love you, I never would think, that you are ready to destroy our relations.
I did not think, that difficulties can stop you on a way to our meeting.
It seems to me, that you did not love me why you so have acted with me!?
I thought, that we could save together money for tickets, but you have simply decided to surrender, not trying at all to save money for tickets.
It certainly easier than to struggle for the love!!
I understand, that you do not make enough money, I too earn a little, but I could find the second work to help you, to save money.
I thought, that your love to me is fair, I thought, that we are capable to make our dreams real.
As to me now to live after such... After that you have made.
I love you and to me is sad, that I was mistaken in you and counted you ideal the man.
I think, that it is still time rescue our love...
How you think?
Now, I wonder if she is really legit? She is a very sweet girl, she has never even once sent an erotic photo. All were very innocent and natural photos.
I was floored when she said she would get another job to help pay for the tickets.
I would like to hear some advice so I can make a good decision.
On the one hand, I am afraid I could lose a good girl; on the other hand, losing her could be a blessing.
So, what is the consensus, is she a scam, or a good catch? Thanks for your time!!
Wavy- These Women/Men who are on these sites are GOOD, partner. They have learned patience, human nature, psychology, ego, pride, all kinds of things having to do with scamming people out of their money.
Remember, Wavy, these fuckers are probably working some 2 or 3 hundred men at one time, so they can afford to take their time.
I have emailed back and forth with about 10 of these fools. If you have the time, and the inclination, start telling her that you don't feel right about having some 'Young Beauty' waste her life with an Old Guy like you. Lay that shit on thick. Pretty soon, you can ask for pictures of her and her Mum.
Then, start asking if it might be possible to 'do the Dirty Deed' with Mum. How about you AND Mum?
If you did not initiate contact with this girl/fucker, remember- they have already fucked you out of money. They will do it again given the chance.
Your situation is anything but unique, actually. And yes, I will give you a 95% probability that it is a scam. A young lady from Russia who is not very wealthy by Russian standards has a very slim chance of obtaining a tourist visa - she is too much of a 'flight risk' as far as the American Embassy is concerned. She has no real incentives to come back to Russia once her visa term is over. That is the deciding factor for any applicant whom the Embassy considers. Will they really leave the US once they are in? For a young, pretty, single Russian girl traveling alone - not likely! So the Embassy is not likely to issue her a tourist visa. However, there is another type of visa that you should research if you are really serious about this lady - the K1 fiancee visa, in which you (as the US citizen) petition the US govt to allow her to come over here, and you take the financial responsibility for her once she is here. Requirements for that visa are: you will have to show that you two have met before (so YOU need to come and visit her first, and then invite her to the US as your fiancee), and you need to show that you make over a minimum wage. Both of your backgrounds will be checked to make sure you don't have criminal history, etc.
If you can't afford to travel to Russia to see her, then you can't afford to help her to come over here - the expense is the same.
I saw that you are suspicious to Ol'ga from Volzhsk, so am I.
I am curious about if you have stopped writing her, or if you 'did keep her warm' for fun.
I have been laying low because I had a bad feeling.
So far I have got 8 letters, mostly asking because I do not write back.
We have not got to the point, where she ask for money yet. But today she
told me that she did tell her mother about me. Cute....
She is using the name Ol'ga and e-mail email@example.com
in her contact with me.
Best regards, Ketil ( Norway )

Hi Wanwan, as requested I will post some mail from 'Irina' for all to see, the pics are already posted here. I suspect that I have the email address of the guy behind this scam as if you google some of the many IP addresses he uses as Irina you will find that they will lead you to him. Bear in mind that the computer may be shared but I got a different IP on each email I received, some were fake and maybe the email I have traced may also belong to an innocent party.

This is the last letter I received from Irina. She wouldn't chase after me! lol she never read any of my mail anyway, even when I sent her a complete Literotica story! I guess they look in their inbox and see who has replied and then shoot off the next letter that they have, to eventually get to the money letter.
I also think I have been in touch with this scammer before as I have a new email adr for Irina so maybe she thought I was a new sucker to get money from. I don't believe that a guy composed these letters so girls are invoved in the scam I am sure, I mean what man could write such rubbish? omg, wanwan, you should create your own forum, if you are going to spam here all those letters :-) letters are made by programs and one is similar to another, there is no use to copy/paste all of them here, in my humble opinion.
