Another note from Maria Shabalina today. Shes still not asking for money, yet... but saying how bad it is that her vacation starts soon and she wants to be with me. Shes going to see a friend today about the money, one friend just didn't have it, but not to worry, she will take care of it on her own. I'm still waiting on the 'I hate to ask, but can you please help?' If she doesn't, will shock us all. I figure all these posts here with the same pics of her, but different emails are different people typing them. She has been pretty good actually about answering my questions. BUT, didn't want me to mail her anything, so that brought up a red flag pretty soon. Have talked to her on the phone, least that person was female. The story continues........ DH

Hi there, Maria Shabalina is going to meet many guys on her vacation, she wrote me almost the same but I haven't come that far in the conversation yet. Good to know what will come... I got the same pics.

different scammers using the same pics.
different scammers using the same form mails.

your scammer's not reading your replies, he's got his spam program on automatic...usually the BAT!...and he personalizes a few words or sentences in each letter for you.

You could write any old crap to him and he probably won't notice, he'll just send you the next mail in the chain....not just because most scammers can't speak much English but also because he's too busy sending out mails to dozens of guys. They call it economies of scale...the more he sends, the more likely he'll scam somebody. He'll read your replies after he's sent you the money letter, for obvious reasons.

Oh yes, very same Maria Shabalina. Todays letter said she could pay for a ticket here, but she needs to go to the embassy on 10-22 with $600.00 . Wonder where she came up with ticket money all of a sudden? Same vacation time as well. 10-20 to 11-20. And today said that she tried to borrow money from a guy, but he wanted her to have sex with him first. Have heard that before as well. The story will continue, I will play with her more,,,,,DH

Eddie from Sweden talked to her on the phone? that's pretty unusual. Bet she called you and not the other way, right? Bet she said that she didn't have a phone and you couldn't call her yourself? If you called her first, then it would almost be setting a precedent for a scammer! I've only ever been able to call real girls.

otherwise, for any newcomers who find this thread, via Google or whatever:

80-90% of Russian dating scammers are men, mostly working in small gangs in or around Yoshkar Ola, in Mari El republic. It's virtually guaranteed that the girls in the pics aren't involved because the scammers steal pics from the internet or pay unsuspecting friends for them, or buy and exchange them on scammer websites. They use form mails and spam programs on automatic reply, very often the BAT!, which can personalize small parts of each letter. They won't read your letters until after the money letter because they don't have time, ie because they're scamming, or trying to scam, as many guys as possible (economies of scale) can write any crap in your mails before that and they won't react, they're only interested when they want to know if you've taken the bait. The majority nowadays use proxy servers or forged IPs to hide their locations. A girl is only involved either occasionally to phone a guy up, especially when he's suspicious and the scammers want to convince him she's real, or to pick up the loot at Western Union, with a false ID of course. Otherwise it's all guys.

If several or more of the following criteria apply to your Boris (the beautiful Russian 'girl' that is supposedly writing to you), resist the temptation to help 'the poor girl' by sending her money. You're really writing to a sleazy guy sitting in a smoky room with a bunch of other sleazy guys spamming indiscriminately on laptops .

# 'girl' writes to you first on a dating site...especially a free one (or an email appears out of nowhere in your mailbox). Real Russian girls are rarely so bold as to write to you first. (unless you're obviously very attractive or rich :). They might reply to your mails, but they rarely write first. It's the man who should do the chasing. Plus if they're looking for a partner, they generally prefer him to be Russian speaking and live in Russia. Much more convenient!
# girl's much too young for you (or too good to be true/looks like a model/porno star)....although I have noticed a recent tendency for some scammers to use photos of slightly 'less attractive' girls.
# girl has some far-fetched excuses for you not visiting her in Russia (criminal city, not the Russian custom, terrorism, it's her dream to come to your country, etc). ALL BULLSHIT!! Actually, the normal way to meet a Russian girl is to visit her in her city first!
# scammers rarely have children, but most the real Russian women I've ever met on the internet did. (except for Moscow career girls)
# photos are too revealing (can't be a respectable girl). Respectability is very important to most Russian women (especially Moscow career girls). Think with your brain!
# most of the pics are old and a little bit faded with a curiously grainy quality that soon becomes easy to recognise (overuse?). A serious girl who's looking for a partner, would save up and go to a professional to have a studio set done, and/or borrow a digicam at least (dates should also be on the photos you receive). My fiancée did it. Russian girls aren't all that poor anymore, and if they seriously want to leave Russia, they know that posting sleazy pics will only attract cheap guys.
# girl claims not to have a mobile phone. Very unlikely!!! fer f***'s you know a single girl without a mobile phone? Even poor Russian girls can't do without one, they're much cheaper than in Europe and a megafon telephone card doesn't cost that much either. You should be able to call her when you want. On the other hand, not having a landline or a desktop/laptop is very common.
# very long rambling/ecstatic form letters with a strange format, punctation and layout written in scamlish. (world's worst Babelfish copy)
# writes long letters everyday in English. How does she have time to write those long letters if she's working? (And if she doesn't have a job, how can she afford a computer + internet?) Most Russians outside Moscow can hardly speak a word of English anyway. And what's the point of finding a girl you can't communicate with, at least on a basic level? + if she can't speak English, why does she have a non-cyrillic email account?
# doesn't answer direct questions (sometimes factual mistakes in the letter)
# falls in 'love' very quickly. Don't let your ego or loneliness pull the wool over your eyes. She doesn't know you. You could be an axe murderer for all she knows. Russian TV is full of documentaries about Russian girls who have emigrated and got murdered, abandoned, etcetc.
# uses a proxy server to hide his/her location, ie a SOCKS server / GPRS Internet. if you can't trace 'her' IP, it's 100% scam. If she uses gmail, be suspicious too cos you won't be able to trace the IP. Hotmail and yahoo are acceptable if she'll chat with you on messenger.

MOST IMPORTANT...if you get this far:
# wants money for a 'visa' and/or maybe tickets, but IT'S VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR A SINGLE RUSSIAN GIRL TO GET A TOURIST VISA TO A WESTERN COUNTRY! She can get a sponsored visa with your help, but then she needs a personal letter of invitation from you, a copy of your passport, a proof of your residence in your home country, a completed sponsor's application form (also from you)....not including the documents that she has to fill in herself. All of these she has to drop off at your national embassy in Moscow WITH PREPAID TICKETS and wait 10 working days. These are the rules for the Schengen countries...the USA and Canada are almost as complicated. Anyway, a normal tourist visa + travel costs + hotel rooms would set her back 2000+ US dollars for a trip to the US. She should be asking you for a lot of money! Why should it be so easy for a gorgeous sexy girl just to jump on a plane and fall into bed with you? Be realistic. should check your national embassy website in Moscow for visa prices and procedures.

There are a few scammers that are more patient and professional. There are even a few real girls scamming, and professional gold-diggers. One or two (mostly in the Ukraine) are not even afraid to use their true identities. These scammers are harder to spot.

But a ground rule is: if you are looking for a Russian wife/partner, you must be prepared to travel to Russia to meet her. And if she turns out to be a professional gold-digger, which has never happened to me personally or anyone I know, you should try to be philosophical and treat it as an exotic trip to a foreign country, have fun anyway, and try not to waste too much money on her.

There are actually hundreds of perfectly nice Russian girls in Russia but you have to go and get them. Chercher la femme.

I got the email from Maria Shabalina today ........the one about her guy friend wanting sex for money and how she was totally shocked and offended . Still didn't ask me for money but says she cries when she looks at her packed suitcase etc. etc. I'm still playing the game out of curiosity . I'm really messing with her/him .

Yes she did call me. talked for two minutes exactlyfrom a 'payphone'. I am very used to these scams and the stories, I just like to play with them. She also told me she cried looking at her packed suitcases. Didn't really say send the $600, but it was still there. Gonna play with her just to see what stories she continues with. I got one from a Irina the other day, it was an exact copy of a letter on another site. Sometimes you can Google part of a sentence and it will show up on scam sites. Guys you may want to try that. I'm gonna play Maria a bit more. I want to just see where she goes with it next.....DH

Eddie from Sweden

well of course, it's great that you're wasting their time. What you're doing is what we call 'baiting'. There are quite a few guys doing it here, dirk from holland, pierre from USA, fjellhare, should seriously read a few of the threads. We have them running to the bank for non-existent money grams etc, but something always goes wrong with the transfer least it stops them ripping off another guy.

However, you're not as experienced as you think if you think you're dealing with a girl. You're dealing with organized gangs of guys, sometimes with a girl, probably a girlfriend in cahoots, who they use to phone up guys and/or pick up the loot from Western Union. You need to stop referring to your scammers as she' and 'her'.

Could you please post an advanced header from one of your scam mails and we can trace the IP address?

Eddie, oh I know this is guys doing the letters. I was just 'lucky' to get a call from a female. I just use 'she' cause thats what most people are used to. I may have scared 'Maria Shabalina' away yesterday. I asked her to take a picture, with my name on a piece of paper holding it up and saying 'I love you' and also include the date it was made on the piece of paper. Bet I get a sob story that she can't do that, her camera isn't working now. And I will do the fake money thing if it goes that far, I have done that before with lots of Nigerian scammers. I do love playing the games with them.

Here are the ip addresses, seems to be coming from Moscow of course, I can check ip addresses as well.

She says shes in Kazan

Eddie from Sweden are a very demanding scam victim, asking for photos like that. ;D
Still, at least your scammer's reading your mails anyway, if he/she's fobbing you off with a 'no-camera' excuse....although in my experience not that many Russian girls have a digicam actually, but they ALL have a mobile phone.

As for the IPs, the first one is his email account,, which is in Moscow and not really relevant, but the second is the standard Mari El Internet provider, Volgatelecom, right in the heart of scam country. So, as you probably know, the scammer's not in Kazan at all, but two republics to the north, probably in or near Yoshkar Ola, Mari El republic.

It's up to you if you want to bait him, of course.(I can't be bothered with the Nigerian scammers btw, they're just TOO ridiculous, but I sometimes bait the Russians). My feeling is that you're right...bit of an amateur. He doesn't even use a proxy server, just the usual Mari El Net. Calling you up was a nice touch though.

If you get tired of him, here's a mail you can send him in Russian. I happen to be engaged to a Russian girl, been there twice in the last year, and can write a bit of Russian (with the help of a good translation program). I've got a cyrillic version (which would work with his email system), but I'm guessing you use yahoo or gmail, and these free email providers aren't compatible with cyrillic. You can complement it with a nice photo I've attached.

email title: scam business

Hello vile greedy one!
Please do not insult my intelligence. You don't live in Kazan, you live in Yoshkar Ola, a criminal city in Russia. You send me stolen photos and poor-quality copy letters. Soon, you'll request money to obtain a visa (impossible to obtain without a letter of invitation from me and tickets as well.)

Therefore, I will save you some time. Go from here to seek an honest job, you miserable swindler. I'm not interested in your scam business. Get lost or I'll kick your ass. Go fuck yourself!

Oh yeah,
A scammer demanding a photo?

Send them Bundy, Shipman, Dahmer or any confirmed dead serial killer; Or Tim McVay, Oklahoma bomber.

They deserve nothing better!

Eddie, so far no reply to wanting that picture from her. They have been writing me every day till now. And I knew it wasn't from Kazan, when I asked a question about a stadium there, they didn't have a clue, and it was only about three blocks from the supposed apartment building. Google earth works well for that type of thing. I do use Yahoo and Hotmail for emails. So not sure about the cryllic version working. I will still push them till the game is over. Far as the Nigerian scammers, they are so easy. With me, they always go right to Yahoo im, and first chat, they ask for money. Either I blow them off then or play the fake mcn # game with them. Its funny to see them come back later and say no money, what happened?? Darn that Western Union always losing money. Hahahaha!!, thanks for all the tips too, this is a good site...... DH
